Who is Navae?

Today it has been 5 weeks since my mom's memorial. I was such a beautiful tribute to her. In attendance were family, friends, educators, physicians, chaplains, volunteers, community members...so many people whose lives she had touched. I am posting what I said during her service because I am remembering my mom with joy in my heart.

Who is Navae?

She is a darling daughter, a stubborn sister, could be a conviving cousin, a cherished wife, a magnificent mom, a marvelous mother in law, a loyal sister in law, the ultimate grandmother, an awesome aunt, a true friend, a gifted teacher, a role model, an advocate for children, a woman whose faith and love for Lord is strong.

She has loved children who were born in other families whom she could mother and grandmother. She championed for the underdog. When we were growing up in junior high and high school she would stop and pick up the boys who were walking home down the Old Alvarado road from Burleson High School because they had been kicked off the bus. She would say “Laura, Mecca move over, move that stuff, he needs a ride.” We would be embarrassed and not sure what to say, but she always would welcome the tough kid into the car and make him feel comfortable by telling him some embarrassing fact about us. She was always ready to set another place at the table for a friend of Charles’. She liked his jokes on her, but mostly when they were on other people. She endured Allan’s pranks and would conspire with him to create an elaborate prank on someone else.

In high school she was a Cheerleader, a future homemaker of America and Football Sweetheart. The cheerleader, the homemaker, and the sweetheart are roles she never abandoned. God gave her an amazing strength, purpose and sense of humor.

My father was her true love.

She was bossy, could be controlling in my life, wanted me believe she was never wrong. She made me wear hose to church. She made sure we sat down for dinner every night as a family. She planned great family vacations. I inherited her inability to sing. She looked beautiful no matter what. She threw the best slumber parties ever and was always willing to pick up our friends at the skating rink or after football games. She held my hand during every surgery and gave me a self confidence that could not be rivaled. She brought laughter to every situation. She taught me to pray and to believe in the answers to come.

She loved Coleman, Sumner, Ella, Joshah and Henry and has delighted in all of their antics, which they inherited from her! She grandchildren were her most precious treasures.

Our lives are filled with funny stories and tender moments and wonderful memories. I will miss her, but am oh so very happy she is in the presence of her savior.

She would want us to share our memories with one another, love each other, laugh at every opportunity we have and love those who need love.

Navae is my mom.
